Playwright and Play

North-American playwright Tina Howe (b. 1937) has been the recipient of several awards, including the Rosamond Gilder for Outstanding Creative Achievement in Theatre. Her production includes Coastal Disturbances (1986) and Pride's Crossing (1997). Her latest work, Chasing Manet, premiered in New York in April 2009.


Painting Churches , winner of the Obie Award for Distinguished Playwriting in 1983, is one of Tina Howe's most emblematic works, and has had numerous productions in the United States but remains relatively unknown in Europe. A film adaptation entitled The Portrait was directed for television by Arthur Penn in 1993.
